Thornton Memorial Boys Club
Thornton Memorial Boys Club began with the club's dedication on May 22, 1940, and continues still today. The first home for the club was located on Lincoln Avenue next to the Day and Carter Mortuary. Throughout the early years the club members were in a building that was originally designed to be used as a family dwelling! A new and permanent home for the Boys Club was built and dedicated on February 27, 1957. Many past members have become contributing volunteers in a variety of areas: board members, coaches, volunteers, officials, ect. The Thornton Memorial Boys Club serves the boys of Lawrence County and surronding counties by offering a variety of programs both new and those rich in tradition. Athletic programs, along with our after-school/educational programs continue to develop on an ongoing basis. The club, as a non-profit organization, has been very fortunate to have been supported by the community. This continued support is essential for the success of the club and its on-going development of new programs, in addition to sustaining the traditional ones. Our hope is that our members will be positively impacted through their involvement in the club and that we might be a stimulus to our members and provide an enviroment where they they might realize a sense of "self-worth. Our Mission Statement Is: To provide outstanding, fun filled youth progratms in a safe enviroment that inspires members to develop their potetial as productive, caring and responsible citizens.
Fall Awards Banquet The fall awards banquet was a huge success. This year the event was sponsored by Knights of Columbus and held at the K of C Hall. Players and coaches of the championship teams from baseball and football were treated to a meal of hot dogs, chips and ice cream. Each player was then presented with a championship trophy. We wish to express our thanks to the Knights of Columbus for hosting the Awards Banquet and hope this is the beginning of a long tradition.
